CC Sabathia takes a tumble off the mound while throwing pitch (Big League Stew)

If you’ve ever seen Los Angeles Angels shortstop Andrelton Simmons play, you know what we mean. Simmons’genius is that he can make difficult plays look routine, and impossible plays seem possible. In the sixth inning of Thursday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles, Sabathia took a tumble off the mound while attempting to throw a pitch. [read full article]

Worn down and banged up, the Baltimore Orioles found the perfect remedy for all their ailments - a well-pitched game. Chris Tillman tied for the major league lead with his 14th win, throwing four-hit ball for seven innings and helping the depleted Orioles avert a four-game sweep at Yankee Stadium, beating New York 4-1 Thursday. ''You could tell he was trying to give us what we really needed,'' manager Buck Showalter said. [read full article]

Indians-Orioles preview (The Associated Press)

Injuries and illness have crippled the Baltimore Orioles in recent days, and life will not get much easier when they face the American League Central-leading Cleveland Indians on Friday night at Camden Yards. The Indians send out right-hander Trevor Bauer (7-3, 3.36 ERA) against rookie right-hander Dylan Bundy (2-2, 3.70), making just his second start. Cleveland last played on Wednesday and Tyler Naquin belted two homers and finished with six RBIs as the Indians hit five homers in an 11-4 victory over the defending World Series champion Kansas City Royals. Pineda pitches 6 strong innings, Yankees beat Orioles 5-0 (The Associated Press)

The Yankees are finally hitting and pitching well at the same time, and that may keep these batters and hurlers together in New York for at least a little while longer. Michael Pineda didn't allow a run for the first time this season, Mark Teixeira homered in his return from his latest injury, and the Yankees moved two games above .500 for the first time since April with a 5-0 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday night. Pineda (4-9) had six strikeouts with runners in scoring position, repeatedly wriggling out of jams to get through six innings and protect the bullpen. [read full article]

Ryan Flaherty was maybe too amped up to face Aroldis Chapman (Big League Stew)

Facing New York Yankees closer Aroldis Chapman is no easy task. Given all those factors, it’s no surprise MLB hitters would try to pump themselves up in preparation for an at-bat against Chapman. Baltimore Orioles infielder Ryan Flaherty attempted to do just that recently, but may have been a little too excited to amp himself up. [read full article]

Orioles-Yankees preview (The Associated Press)

The New York Yankees have spent more than a month depending on others to beat the Baltimore Orioles. On Monday, they had their first opportunity to collide head-on with the team which has held at least a share of first place in the American League East since June 5. In that sense, the series opener was a success as the Yankees will look to get another win over the Orioles on Tuesday night when the four-game series continues at Yankee Stadium. O's star Davis hospitalized Sunday with illness, out Monday (The Associated Press)

Chris Davis is not in the lineup for the Baltimore Orioles for a game Monday night against the New York Yankees after spending the night in a hospital with an illness. Showalter says Davis might have the same bug that affected Zach Britton and Matt Wieters at the All-Star Game, which was ''about a 24-hour thing.'' Showalter was uncertain if Davis would be available to pinch hit Monday. [read full article]

Yankees-Red Sox preview (The Associated Press)

Holding any kind of lead in the American League East over the New York Yankees has been a rarity for the Baltimore Orioles, especially in July. Baltimore can widen its lead over the Yankees on Monday night when it opens a four-game series at Yankee Stadium. The Orioles are ahead of the Yankees through this point in the season for the second time in three years as they enter Monday 8 1/2 games up on fourth-place New York. [read full article]

Power-laden Orioles could use help from starting rotation (The Associated Press)

The Baltimore Orioles bashed their way into first place before the All-Star break, hitting a major league leading 137 homers while averaging more than five runs per game. Baltimore also played exceptionally well defensively and received ample contributions from the back end of the bullpen, most notably All-Star relievers Brad Brach and Zach Britton. The team's strengths were as obvious as its most glaring weakness: the starting rotation. [read full article]

Blue Jays by the numbers: Five things from the first half (Eh Game)

It took a second half run for the ages last season for the Blue Jays to get into playoffs. As thrilling as it was, though, it's best not to leave it so late again. So far, so good, with these five areas from the first half that indicate they should be recognized as contenders in the American League. ON THE RIGHT TRACK At 51-40 the Blue Jays have their best record at the All-Star break since 1992, when they were 53-34. Of course, they went on to win their first of back-to-back World Series later that year. There is, however, one major difference. While they had a four-game lead in the division in 1992, Toronto is tied with the Boston Red Sox for second in the AL East this season, trailing the first-place Baltimore Orioles by two games, but good enough for a wild-card spot. COUNTING STARS Josh Donaldson, Edwin Encarnacion, Marco Estrada, Michael Saunders, and Aaron Sanchez are headed to the All-Star game, giving the Blue Jays their most All-Stars since 2006. The only year Toronto had more All-Stars representatives was in 1993, when they had seven. Anything that harkens back to 1992 or 1993 is a good sign for future success. [read full article]

Orioles-Dodgers preview (The Associated Press)

One of the American League's best teams will face one of the National League's most intriguing rookie pitchers when the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers begin a three-game series on Monday night at Dodger Stadium. The Orioles arrive in California leading the Boston Red Sox by three games in the American League East, despite having the league's third-best record. The Seattle Mariners narrowed Baltimore's divisional advantage with a four-game sweep that gave the Mariners a 6-1 record against the Orioles this year. [read full article]

Orioles-Mariners preview (The Associated Press)

The improbable and obscure owner of that distinction takes the mound for the Seattle Mariners on Friday night as the 31-year-old left-hander brings a 23 2/3-innings scoreless streak into his start against the Baltimore Orioles. LeBlanc's scoreless streak, which only applies to major league games, extends all the way back to Sept. 2, 2014, when he was pitching out of the Los Angeles Angels' bullpen. [read full article]

Trumbo hits 23rd homer, has 4 RBIs as Orioles beat Pads 12-6 (The Associated Press)

Mark Trumbo's magnificent two-run home run into the second deck in left field was the 55th of the month for the Baltimore Orioles, tying the big league record for long balls in June. ''Some guys are aware of it, some aren't,'' Trumbo said after the Orioles routed the San Diego Padres for the second straight game, 12-6 on Wednesday. Trumbo hit his major league-leading 23rd homer and drove in four runs for the AL East-leading Orioles, who won their seventh straight game. [read full article]
