How about Victor Martinez? After playing in just 73 games in 2008 following mid-season surgery to remove bone chips from his elbow, Martinez has come out swinging thus far in ’09, leading the majors with a .400 batting average. The 30-year-old Venezuelan has already reached his totals from last year in walks, runs scored, home runs, and total bases.

mall part of this picture was the Indians' own injury blitz this season, which only Friday claimed Victor Martinez. As the ChiSox surge into summer at the top of the division, and the Tigers look to be sharpening their claws, it's possible Cleveland is ready to toss in the towel, at least as far as Sabathia is concerned.

Cleveland put Victor Martinez on the DL, while Seattle placed its once-reliable closer JJ Putz back on the DL, both with elbow injuries. And unlike Soriano's freak fracture, there were hints at undiagnosed problems with both Martinez and Putz.
