The team that made it to the World Series ago just two years ago and traded for Miguel Cabrera, Dontrelle Willis, and Edgar Renteria in the offseason was expected to make a return trip to the Fall Classic but got off to an awful start to the season and never looked like a championship team, but who would have ever predicted they’d be giving the Royals a run at the bottom of the division?

Another Tigers player – Jacque Jones, who was just designated for assignment – is one of Detroit’s three outfielders listed on the ballot. This issue probably won’t cause a problem since Jones has no chance of getting elected, but it still keeps whoever replaces Jones in the starting lineup (thus far Brandon Inge and rookie Matt Joyce) from being listed on the ballot and unless he catches the eye of Terry Francona, the AL’s manager this year, the odds that he will have any chance of making the team are slim to nil.

I was pleased to see Curtis Granderson back in the Tigers lineup and immediately contributing in his first major-league action this season, going 2-4 with two walks, two RBI’s, and three runs scored in Detroit’s 19-6 shellacking of Texas on Wednesday. Granderson followed up his season debut by leading off Thursday’s game with a home run and igniting the Tiger offense in an 8-2 win, completing a three-game sweep of the Rangers.
