g season on the mound.  He led the majors in ERA (2.27) and finished just one strikeout behind Jered Weaver’s 233 and one inning pitched shy of Halladay’s 250.2 – both of which led all big league pitchers.  The Venezuelan workhorse threw six innings or more in 32 of 34 starts, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 30 of them.  Had he played for any team other than the Mariners, whose lack of offense cost all of their pitchers, Hernández would almost certainly have won 20 games or more.

How ‘bout that?

How about Jered Weaver?  The 27-year-old righty leads the majors with 182 strikeouts and is having his best season (11-7, 2.87 Earned Run Average) since his rookie year (2006), when he went 11-2 with a 2.56 ERA.  Since the All-Star break, Weaver has been even better, posting a 1.93 ERA, limiting opponents to a .204 batting average, and averaging seven innings per outing over six starts.  With the Rangers playing so well in the AL West, the Angels are unlikely to win the division for the fourth straight year and may even finish under .500 for the first time since 2003, but they have to be pleased with how their ace has pitched this season.

How about tomorrow’s all-Weaver all-Los Angeles matchup?  The Angels send Jered Weaver to the hill against the city’s other team, the Dodgers, who have big brother Jeff Weaver scheduled to pitch.  Should be a fun family affair.

The game everyone’s talking about from last night is the near-no-hitter—so called because only eight innings were completed—by the Angels, who lost the game to the Dodgers—which is why the no-hitter was only eight innings: the winning Dodgers didn’t need to take their bottom-of-the-ninth at-bats.
