George Sherrill

years that it doesn’t take a superstar to close effectively, Jim Johnson closing games after George Sherrill was traded to the Dodgers was not a pretty sight. Though Gonzalez threw only a few more innings than Johnson did, his 2009 E.R.A. (2.42) and strikeout totals (90) were far better than Johnson’s (4.11 and 49). It’s a safe bet that handing the ball to Gonzalez in the ninth inning will result in more Oriole victories than would giving it to Johnson.

When I walked into Camden Yards yesterday, I had a good feeling. I didn't want to vocalize it to my father, as not to jinx it. After all, the Orioles had lost their past 15 Sunday games, not winning on the day of rest since April 6 against Seattle. Not to mention the fact that today was my dad's birthday, so he had high hopes that everything would come together just for him.

e taxed pitchers like Brandon Webb (who had pitched seven innings and 108 pitches two days before), George Sherrill (the Orioles’ closer, who pitched two and a third innings), and Scott Kazmir (who had also pitched on Sunday, logging six innings and 104 pitches). Webb and Kazmir weren’t supposed to appear at all, with Tampa manager Joe Maddon specifically requesting that Kaz rest his arm, and we have yet to see what the effects might be on them, or guys like Carlos Marmol, who threw an inning in spite of recent struggles and a strong need for rest.
