New York Yankee signings and trades over the last eight years (Mike Mussina, Jason Giambi, Alex Rodriguez, Hideki Matsui, etc.) have not yet led to a single World Championship. That’s right – these “impact” players, as they are commonly called, have not been able to bring even one trophy to the city of New York. Sure, the Yankees have been perennial contenders this entire decade, but they haven’t been able to seal the deal for The Boss, who expects everything and more from his high-priced talent. So while it is inevitable that all Yankee haters worry about what the 2009 season will bring now that the Bronx Bombers have signed CC Sabathia, Mark Teixeira, and A.J. Burnett, there’s no reason to suddenly assume that the team has what it takes to go all the way.
The big question on my mind is: will the new Yankee Stadium have the same mystique and aura as The House That Ruth Built?
A’s shouldn’t have brought back Giambi
Jason Giambi is returning to Oakland to play for his old team, but if you ask me, he doesn’t deserve that opportunity. Seven years ago Giambi sold his soul and left the west coast to put on Yankee Pinstripes. He gave up his kingdom in the Bay Area for the glamour of New York City.
Now I’m not saying Giambi should be forced into early retirement, but as I’ve said before, loyalty ranks pretty high in my book, and that’s a quality the Giambino lacks. The A’s should not put a welcome mat at their front door for him to feel at home. It isn’t just because he left them for more money, or because he led A’s fans (and Yankee-haters like me) to believe that he was considering coming back. It’s that Giambi, the most prominent position player in the organization at the time, added insult to injury by deserting the team when he was needed most. He is a sell-out, an admitted cheater, and in my opinion, Bad For Ball.
